The TOWRP design had two primary considerations: (1) facilitate the use of large waterwheels and (2) incorporate a reasonably large cavity for the beach ball. The motivation for the large waterwheels was driven by aesthetics, and also the knowledge that our TOWRP would be significantly heavier than other boats and would require large paddles for propulsion. It was discovered in prototyping our design that the inflated lip of the goals made it extremely difficult to score with the beach ball. Our solution was to incorporate a slanted backboard that could be used to ‘ramp-up’ the beach ball and force it over the goal lip. A ‘kicker’ motor was also installed to give the ball more juice. As it happened, the goals were changed before the competition and this functionality was not required – but the ferocity of the kicker motor did intimidate the opponent team!
