Our primary motivation for the COACH design we chose centered on a controller that was intuitive, interactive, and fun for the user to handle. It was important to remember that the COACH would be used to control all the TOWRPs in the class and thus should be easily adapted to various propulsion methods used by other teams. We also wanted to incorporate a theme that would connect the COACH with the TOWRP. We decided to go with an 1800’s paddlewheel theme similar to ‘Steamboat Willie’ or ‘Huckleberry Finn’. In order to give the user an experience of driving a huge paddle-wheeler down the Mississippi, we made a large traditional ship wheel the centerpiece of the COACH design. In addition to this, a throttle controlled the forward and reverse direction of the TOWRP, and combined with the wheel presented a very intuitive method of controlling any paired TOWRP. To expand on the theme of an old paddle wheel, we constructed a large support structure, both to support the various components, and give the user the experience of standing behind the helm of a large boat. The interactive experience was aided with the use of a ship bell that must be rung if a mutiny occurs, and a life-ring to throw overboard if the user wanted to jettison the crew and assert command over another TOWRP. A large display console was centered over the steering wheel and gave the user feedback on morale, mutiny alert, paired status, and TOWRP control. An extra feature we added was the 1970 Mountain classic ‘Mississippi Queen’ which plays from the steam pipes upon asserting command of the Mississippi Queen TOWRP itself.
